Strategy

  1. Skim the graph or table Read what is being measured, they key, how the data is being measured. Do not linger too long and don’t analyze the data yet as you don’t know what argument to support.

  2. Identify the argument Find the argument the passage is making to find what data you’re looking for. Ex: evaluations varied widely depending on which occupation was being considered

  3. Create a test phrase Boil down the argument into a few words that is easily understood. Ex: a wide swing

  4. Test the choices Test your test phrase against every answer and see if they best support the argument

Top Tips

  • Find the story Data tells a story, similarities, differences, and changes over time. The passage will draw attention to the story. Ex: a wide swing in data when you compare robot jobs

  • Be flexible There are many ways for the table to support the argument. Pick the answers that draw from the data and support your argument. If you approach with a specific answer in mind, you may miss an equally supportive answer.
